Why are my ads getting clicks but no customers?

When paid clicks don't turn into enquiries, the problem is often after the click. How to check targeting, the landing page and the contact path.

Clicks feel like progress, but you pay for them whether or not anyone becomes a customer. If clicks keep coming and customers don't, the useful question is where the journey breaks after someone taps your ad.

Check that the click matches the promise

An ad makes a promise: a service, an offer, a location. If the page it opens talks about something more general, visitors feel misled and leave. Open your own ad on a phone and check that the first screen continues exactly what the ad said.

Make sure you're reaching the right people

Broad targeting or loose search terms can attract people who will never buy, for example from outside your service area or looking for something you don't offer. Review the search terms or audiences behind your clicks before changing the page.

Check whether conversions are being measured

Sometimes customers do arrive, but nobody can see it. If calls, forms and bookings aren't tracked, or the tracking is broken, an ad can look useless when it isn't, or useful when it isn't. Test your own form and call button and confirm each action is recorded.

Remember that tracking depends on visitor consent in many places, so reported numbers can be lower than reality. Look at enquiries you actually received as well.

Fix the page before raising the budget

If the right people arrive and still don't act, the landing page is the bottleneck. Apply the same checks as for any website: a clear offer, visible trust, one easy action on mobile. Spending more before fixing this simply buys more of the same result.

  • Does the page repeat the ad's offer in the first screen?
  • Is there one obvious action?
  • Is there proof near that action?
  • Does the action work and get recorded?
